Vitamin C is one of the most celebrated ingredients in skincare – and for good reason! It can boost radiance, protect against external stressors and promote a more even skin tone. But did you know there’s a key difference between natural and synthetic Vitamin C? Here, we break down what sets them apart and why MARIA ÅKERBERG always chooses the natural route.
Vitamin C in skincare – two different forms
Both synthetic and natural forms of Vitamin C are used in skincare. However, the difference is not just about origin — it also affects how the skin absorbs and reacts to them.
Synthetic Vitamin C – common but unstable
Many skincare products contain synthetically produced Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbic Acid. This is an attempt to replicate the natural version. While it has exfoliating properties, inhibits melanin production and accelerates cell renewal for a more even skin tone, its low pH can be harsh on sensitive skin, often leading to irritation, dryness and a weakened protective barrier.
Additionally, synthetic Ascorbic Acid oxidises quickly, which can reduce its effectiveness on the skin. To extend its potency, synthetic Vitamin C is often stabilised with chemical additives — something that can disrupt the skin’s natural balance.
Natural Vitamin C – the powerful original
In the products of MARIA ÅKERBERG, natural vitamin C derived from orange is used, listed as Ascorbyl Glucoside. It is a highly potent and stable form of vitamin C that works deeply and over the long term in the skin, gently yet effectively, providing multiple benefits. This vitamin C also activates the skin’s own vitamin E, and together they offer excellent protection against oxidative stress and external environmental factors.
Please note: Products containing vitamin C, such as Night Serum Vitamin C, should not be used by individuals with a citrus allergy.
The effect on your skin
Genuine vitamin C is gentle yet powerful and can work deep within the skin, delivering both immediate and long-term results. It evens out skin tone, reduces the appearance of existing hyperpigmentation, helps prevent new dark spots and contributes to a more uniform complexion – all without causing imbalance or irritation. Vitamin C also protects the skin’s collagen and lipids from oxidation, helping to counteract signs of ageing. Additionally, it boosts collagen production, improving the skin’s elasticity and texture over time, while enhancing radiance in dull, tired-looking skin.
Advanced skincare, powered by nature
For us, the choice is simple. Our philosophy is built on supporting and strengthening the skin’s natural processes rather than forcing quick results that may compromise long-term skin health. We do not use synthetic substances and additives, choosing instead naturally active ingredients that the skin recognises – and that are kind to the environment.
