What is perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is the latin name for an inflammatory rash eruption, mainly located around the mouth. In rare cases, the inflammation can also manifest around the eyes. The condition can remain for months, and sometimes for years.

Perioral dermatitis mostly affects young women, 20-30 years old, and is a skin condition related to rosacea. Usually there is no direct cause, but a connection between perioral dermatitis and excessive washing as well as the use of harsh skincare products. Harsh sunlight and alcohol cunsumption may also worsen the condition.

Symptoms

Perioral dermatitis starts with red spots around the mouth, on the chin and on the cheeks. Sometimes, but this is rare, the rash can be located around the eyes. These spots develop into small papules and small pustules form in the pores. The rash can cause an itching, burning sensation. The skin can also become flaky.

Typical for perioral dermatitis is that there is an area, closest to the lips, that is not affected.

If you have papules that will not heal, there is a possibility that you have perioral dermatitis. If you suspect this, contact a dermatologist shortly to be diagnosed.
