Hyperpigmentation

Advice for your skin

What causes it?

Hyperpigmentation can have a multitude of causes. The most common are sun damage, hormonal imbalance, skin damage and skin disease. Out of these, sun damage is the most common, and also the the easiest one to prevent. Use a high sun protection factor to avoid hyperpigmentation. This is also important to prevent it from reappearing, and to protect against other types of sun damage.

At the salon

In the case of dark hyperpigmentation, we recommend a vitamin-C treatment, preferably a weekly treatment over a period of time. For this treatment, we use a type of vitamin C that is stronger and more lightening than the one that you can use at home. How much your hyperpigmentation can be reduced depends on its cause, and on how deep it goes into the skin.

In general, you will see noticeable results within 8–10 weeks. Make sure you avoid the sun as much as possible during the treatment period. Unfortunately, one single day in the sun can ruin the positive effects of the treatment. Therefore, invest in good sun protection products. To reach the best possible result, use Protecting Oil Outdoor combined with Sun Lotion SPF 20.

The vitamin-C treatment also supplies the skin with a beautiful glow and lots of vitamins. This treatment suits all skin types.

At home

Good skincare is about good habits. No matter what professional treatments you have gotten, it is crucial that you take care of your skin every day. Use the products from MARIA ÅKERBERG that your skin therapist has recommended, and be meticulous with your daily skincare.

Products from MARIA ÅKERBERG contain only natural ingredients that work with the skin instead of against it. These natural ingredients are easily absorbed by the skin, affecting the underlying tissue. MARIA ÅKERBERG works to strengthen the skin long term, in a natural way, rather than just alleviating problems momentarily.

Every day

1. Wash your hands.
2. Wash your face with a suitable cleansing product.
3. Rinse off and dry with a clean towel or napkin.
4. Dab or spray on Freshener.
5. Apply an eye cream, possibly a serum and/or oil and finally cream and/or balm.
6. If you use makeup, you should start with Foundation, Compact Foundation, Compact Cover and/or Mineral Powder.

At night

1. Cleanse your skin (according to 1–4 above).
2. Apply Serum C followed by Night Cream.

The combination of Serum C and Night Cream restructures the skin and counteracts hyperpigmentation. These products work perfectly as nurturing after-sun treatment. However, Serum C and Night Cream must not be used in sunlight, as they make the skin sensitive to light. Use them at night only.

Once or twice a week

1. Apply AHA & Jojoba Peeling on the dark patches and leave on for 20 minutes.
2. Rinse off and dry with a clean towel.
3. Apply Serum C and Night Cream on top.

Our AHA & Jojoba Peeling combines natural Lactic Acid (an AHA from sugarbeet) with grains from Jojoba Oil. These grains have the perfect shape and size to gently remove dead skin cells. Lactic Acid prevents melanin clotting in the skin, creating a lightening effect on temporary hyperpigmentation.
