WHY WE SAY NO TO PFAS AND OTHER SYNTHETIC ADDITIVES

What you apply to your skin matters – both for your health and the environment

Reading the ingredient list on some skincare products can feel like decoding a foreign language – full of abbreviations and complicated terms. But some of these ingredients are more important to look out for than others, especially when it comes to your health and environmental impact. One example is PFAS.

What are PFAS?

PFAS is a collective term for thousands of synthetic chemicals known for their water-, grease- and dirt-repellent properties. It might sound smart and convenient – and that’s exactly why they’ve been used in everything from non-stick pans to raincoats. Unfortunately, they’ve also made their way into the cosmetics industry, where they can be used to make mascara waterproof or to give creams a silky texture. Not quite so clever.

PFAS have been linked to serious health risks, including hormone disruption and effects on the immune system. They are not degradable and can build up in the body over time. Even small amounts of PFAS can cause significant harm in the long run.

How to spot PFAS in the ingredient list

PFAS often hide behind names ending in -fluoro, -perfluoro, or are listed as PTFE. Once you know what to look for, it becomes much easier to avoid them.

SPAs – more ingredients we say no to

Other chemicals with suspected negative health effects include synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs). These are commonly used in conventional cosmetics that contain oils and fats, to prevent them from going rancid, changing colour or developing an unpleasant smell.

The most common SPAs used in cosmetics are:

• BHT – often found in lipsticks, sunscreens and deodorants.

• BHA – used in skincare and hair care products.

• Propyl Gallate – found in shaving products and face creams.

Feel confident choosing MARIA ÅKERBERG

Our ingredient lists are clear and transparent – containing only natural, pure raw materials. We completely exclude synthetic additives, simply because they don’t belong on your skin or in nature.

Instead, we use natural antioxidants and essential oils to help preserve our products and rely on plant-based oils and botanical extracts for texture. All of our ingredients are certified organic by organisations such as ECOCERT and COSMOS.

Choose consciously, choose natural

Saying no to PFAS and other questionable substances isn’t just a personal choice – it’s an important step towards a healthier future for everyone. At MARIA ÅKERBERG, we have always taken a strong stance against PFAS and harmful chemicals – and now, more people are catching on. Countries like Denmark and France have already taken important steps towards banning PFAS and we hope Sweden will follow. The EU is currently discussing a broad ban on PFAS in cosmetics, but no decision has yet been made as of 2025.
